Mrs. Rowlands' Science Class
About Mrs. Rowlands:
This is my ninth year as a Shelby Middle School Whippet! I attended Ohio University and graduated with my degree in education in 1996. I began my teaching career, in Belize, in the Peace Corps. It was there that I met my husband from the UK and I spent the next 15 years traveling around the world with him and his job. I received a Master's from the University of Nottingham in Globalization, Identity & Technology in Teaching in 2003 and a MEd from Ashland University in 2018. Teaching in various countries certainly gives me a different perspective on cultures, teaching practices and life in general.
In my spare time I enjoy our poultry farm, gardening, hiking, camping, fishing, cooking and spending time with my husband David, our two sons, Kai and Finlay and our dogs Roxy and Ollie. I love teaching Science and Social Studies to our awesome 6th graders and I am excited for a fantastic year.

The above video is an amazing look into the life of the cell. Shown at the beginning and the end of the unit, it is amazing what the students can identify after their education.
Rocks and Minerals Unit
What makes up our earth's crust & how?
What is so exciting about rocks and minerals? Why do most children come home with half the neighbor's driveway in their pockets claiming to have found treasure? They are mysterious! It's a rainbow and a cemetery all in one. Share their excitement by looking at some of these beautiful minerals with your student today.
Sometimes, learning to study for application can be frustrating and overwhelming. I am passionate that teaching to think and apply and not just repeat is the way forward. I have attached a few links below that can help you review and study for real life usage of your knowledge. Enjoy!
